My recent meanderings have included the idea that the Bible is basically some people's attempts to define their experiences in the light of relationship with God. Some of those writings give some pretty uplifting glimpses into relationship with God. One of those is the story of "the prodigal son"... which, in my opinion, should really be called "the story of the loving father"...
Most of us see the actions of the son and compare him with ourselves... our faults or failure to live up to a moral code we've deemed "God's way." I have come to focus on the actions of the father in this story... his care, his love, his never letting go of his love for his son whether or not the son's actions were something he approved of... Instead of moving on to the next story, the next idea, the next attempt to interpret some passage of scripture or give this one another context... I stayed there, contemplating the idea of God as a parent who loves so completely and without qualifications.
